Denver Handyman Guide: When to DIY and When to Call a Pro

January 18, 20266 min read

We love a capable homeowner — half our calls start with "I tried to do it myself first." Here's our honest take on which Denver home projects are great DIY candidates and which ones almost always cost more when you skip the pro.

Great DIY projects

  • Painting a single room with normal 8 ft walls.
  • Patching small drywall holes (under 2 inches).
  • Hanging shelves, mirrors, or TVs into studs.
  • Replacing a faucet if the shutoff valves work.
  • Swapping out light fixtures (with the breaker off).
  • Caulking tubs, showers, and exterior trim.

Call a pro

  1. Exterior painting on a 2-story Denver home. Ladder work at altitude, wind, and surface prep aren't worth a fall.
  2. Drywall repairs larger than 6 inches — texture matching is the part everyone gets wrong.
  3. Anything with active water leaks behind walls or under floors.
  4. Garage door spring or cable repairs — these are under thousands of pounds of tension and cause serious injuries every year.
  5. Fence post replacement in Denver's clay soil (concrete and digging are brutal).
  6. Anything load-bearing or that requires a permit.

The "called us second" pattern

The most common pattern we see: a homeowner spends a Saturday plus $200 in materials, the result doesn't look right, and we end up redoing it for the original quote price plus the cost to undo the first attempt. If you're not sure, send us a photo before you start — we'll tell you honestly if it's a DIY project.
