Denver isn't a forgiving climate for exterior paint. Intense UV at altitude, sudden hailstorms, and overnight temperature drops all work against a fresh finish. Pick the wrong week and your $8,000 paint job can start failing in a single season.
The ideal window: late May through early October
The sweet spot for exterior painting in Denver is late May through early October, with June and September being our favorite months. Why?
- Daytime temps consistently between 50–85°F (the cure range for most modern acrylic latex paints).
- Overnight lows above 35°F so paint can cure properly.
- Lower humidity than spring storm season.
- Fewer afternoon thunderstorms than peak July/August.
Months to avoid (and why)
- November–March: Too cold overnight. Paint won't cure and adhesion fails.
- April–early May: Wet snow, mud, and unpredictable cold snaps.
- July afternoons: Direct 90°+ sun on south-facing walls flashes the paint before it can level out.
Pro tips for Denver exteriors
- Follow the shade. We paint the east side in the afternoon and the west side in the morning — never in direct hot sun.
- Check the dew point. If it's within 5°F of the air temp, condensation will ruin the finish overnight.
- Use 100% acrylic exterior paint. It flexes with Denver's temperature swings instead of cracking.
- Always prime bare wood and stucco patches. Our dry air pulls moisture out of unsealed substrates fast.
